Privacy policy

Your camera

When you turn the camera on, the video goes to a hand tracker (Google's MediaPipe) running inside your browser tab. It finds 21 points on your hand in each frame, and the page uses those points to check your handshape. All of this happens on your device. The video is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and neither are the hand points. The camera turns off when you leave the page.

What is kept, and why

In your browser

• A random ID, created the first time you visit (asl_user_id). It identifies your practice history, not you.
• Mixpanel's own identifiers for the analytics described below.
• If you sign in: a sign-in token, and your name, email address and picture, so the page knows it's you.

These are kept in your browser's local storage. ASL a Day doesn't use advertising cookies.

On our server

• Your account, if you sign in with Google: your Google account ID, name, email address and profile picture, and when you last signed in. We never see your Google password or anything else in your Google account. Sign-in sessions are stored only as one-way hashes.
• Practice history, stored against your random ID, or your account's if you sign in: which letters and words you practised, whether you asked to see the handshape or skipped, how long each took, and on which days. We use it to schedule your reviews and count your streak.
• Server logs: like most websites, our servers record requests, such as the page, the time, your IP address and your browser. We use them to keep the site running and secure.

Usage analytics

We record which pages are visited and how practice goes, such as letters signed, hints used, and whether the camera started, to understand what helps people learn and to fix what doesn't. These records include your random ID, the page, your browser and device type, and your IP address, from which an approximate location may be derived. If you're signed in, Mixpanel also receives your name and email address; our own statistics service doesn't. They go to Mixpanel, which may process data in the United States, and to our own statistics service. They never include video or hand points.

If you email us

We keep your message and email address only to reply to you.

Other services the site uses

• The hand-tracking model is downloaded from Google's storage, and its runtime from jsDelivr, when you first turn on the camera. Like any download, they see your IP address and browser; they don't see your camera.
• Signing in uses Google. The home page loads Google's sign-in button, so Google receives your IP address and browser details when you visit it, whether or not you sign in.

What we don't do

• We don't record, store or upload your camera video, or the hand points taken from it.
• We don't sell or rent your data, or use it for advertising.
• We don't require your name or email to practise the alphabet; only the word decks need you to sign in.

How long it's kept

Practice history is kept while ASL a Day runs, so your reviews and streak keep working, unless you ask us to delete it. Analytics and server logs are kept only as long as they're useful for understanding and running the site.

Your choices and rights

• Start fresh: without an account, clearing your browser's site data for asladay.com removes your ID from this device, and your old history is no longer linked to you.
• Delete your account: email [email protected] from the address you signed in with. We'll delete your account and its practice history.
• See or delete your history: signed in, email [email protected] from your account's address. Without an account, email us your ID (in your browser's local storage for asladay.com, under asl_user_id).
• Limit analytics: there's no setting in ASL a Day to turn analytics off yet; a content blocker that blocks Mixpanel will stop it being sent there.

Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as to object to how your data is used, or to complain to a data protection authority. Email us and we'll help.

Children

ASL a Day is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email [email protected] and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If what we keep or how we use it changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
