How to sign A in ASL

Make a fist with your thumb resting straight up against the side of your index finger.

Hold A steady for a moment, with your palm facing the person you're signing to.

Left-handed? Sign with your dominant hand; the shapes are the same, mirrored.

Don't mix it up

S: In A the thumb rests straight up along the side of the index finger; in S it wraps across the front of the fingers.
T: In T the thumb tucks between the index and middle fingers; in A it stays outside, against the index finger.
E: In E the fingertips bend down to rest on the thumb, which lies across the palm; A is a tight fist with the thumb up at the side.
